‘Creating a Cooler, Engaging Playground for Enhanced Learning and Play’
The development of a landscape master plan for Cessnock West Public School (CWPS) to create an enhanced outdoor environment supporting student learning, socialising, and play began in 2021. The objective was to revitalise the school grounds through a strategic, phased approach in order to maximise funding efficiency.
The first phase, completed in mid-2023, transformed a previously uninviting area into a vibrant, nature-based space for play and learning. Collaborating with ACOR Engineering, Daracon Group, CWPS, and the NSW Department of Education, the team replaced uneven surfaces and broken shade sails with flexible play areas, intimate seating, and an outdoor classroom. The design focused on cooling the environment, improving cognitive and physical well-being and incorporating nature with shade sails and tree planting. A central Eucalypt provides habitat and dappled shade.
Environmentally sensitive strategies included increased vegetation, water play features, and the minimisation of artificial surfaces. A dry creek bed addressed drainage and offered nature connection opportunities. Moir Studio conducted research with CWPS to measure heat resilience, using thermal imaging to track improvements in surface temperature before and after completion.
The collaborative process engaged the school community, with students and teachers participating in planting new gardens. This involvement fostered environmental stewardship and ownership, setting a best-practice model for other schools in NSW.
