CRACKNECK LOOKOUT
Darkingjung, Bateau Bay NSW
‘Improving Accessibility, Preserving Natural Beauty, and Boosting Local Tourism’
Situated on Darkinjung Country, Crackneck Lookout has served as a vantage point for millennia. It is a prime destination for whale-watching on the Central Coast, attracting a substantial audience to witness the annual migration of Humpback Whales.
The project, covering 4,500 m², aimed to improve parking, pedestrian safety, and ecological preservation while ensuring compliance with accessibility standards. The design seamlessly integrates into the rugged terrain, prioritising unobstructed views and providing tiered landscaped lawns for relaxation and community gatherings. With 55 parking spaces, including DDA-accessible options, and pathways designed for safety and ease of use, the project balanced conservation with community needs. Public consultation and engagement with local Aboriginal groups guided adjustments to minimise environmental impact and support local businesses.
Goanna Services, an Aboriginal-owned company, contributed to the construction, highlighting the project's commitment to sustainability and economic benefit for the region. The revitalisation is poised to attract more tourists, bolstering the local economy while preserving the site's natural beauty and cultural significance.
