HILLS OF GOLD WIND FARM
Kamilaroi, Nundle NSW
The Hills of Gold Wind Farm is located near Nundle in the Upper Hunter region of New South Wales. The Wind Farm comprises 62 wind turbines and will generate up to 372 MW of energy enough to power approximately 163,000 Australian homes. Moir’s engagement commenced in 2020, and following a rigorous review, the project was approved by the Independent Planning Commission (IPC) in 2024.
The proponent encountered considerable challenges during the assessment process, with visual impact emerging as one of the most contentious issues. The project received a high number of community submissions opposing the development, citing concerns over visual impacts on the scenic rural landscape, the character of the region and proximity to residences. The visibility of turbines on an elevated terrain amplified public concern, contributing to a complex and closely scrutinised approval pathway.
Moir Studio played a pivotal role in addressing these concerns by applying advanced assessment techniques. Our team used point cloud LiDAR data to model views from inaccessible private properties, ensuring that the visual impacts were accurately represented where on-site access was not granted. This technology-supported approach allowed us to produce reliable, defensible assessments that directly informed the planning process.
By combining cutting-edge modelling with a commitment to transparency, Moir helped build trust in the visual impact findings and supported the proponent in responding to community and authority concerns ultimately contributing to the project’s approval.
