‘A revitalising Master Plan Enhancing Commercial Centres with Heritage, Connectivity, and Community Focus’

Cessnock City Council engaged Moir Studio to prepare a Master Plan for revitalising the Kurri Kurri Commercial Centre. The district was experiencing change due to the Hunter Expressway opening in 2014, which was placing pressure on the existing facilities.

The completed Master Plan integrated the District Strategy and was to guide future public domain improvements in the commercial centres of both Kurri Kurri and Weston. This would make it an accessible community supported by attractive and distinct employment centres, strong industry and high-quality open spaces.

The Master Plan highlighted the rich history of Kurri Kurri and Weston through strengthened connections between the built form and the public domain. Emphasis on significant buildings and historical elements reinforced the town's distinct character and differentiated it from nearby centres.

To make the commercial centres thriving and welcoming, a focus on pedestrian and cyclist connectivity to increase safety, amenity, and activity was suggested. Improved vehicular movements and connections encouraged visitors from the wider region to visit the Commercial Centres. Physical and visual links were strengthened to improve the overall quality of the parks and increase their use by a mix of formal and informal user groups.
