LLEWELLYN STREET REVITALISATION
Awabakal, Merewether NSW
‘Enhancing the commercial precinct with public domain and infrastructure improvements, boosting amenity, liveability, vibrancy and sustainability’
Newcastle City Council engaged Moir Studio to complete the Public Domain Plans for Merewether Village Centre.
The Llewellyn Street local shops is a small but vibrant and busy retail strip within residential Merewether. With a good mix of retail, café, takeaway outlets, food, grocery and medical services Llewellyn Street is active and growing neighbourhood retail hub.
In response to an increase in medium-density developments in the area and a new Childcare facility, Newcastle City Council recognised the importance of improving pedestrian access and circulation, addressing car parking pressures, and enhancing the visual amenity of the street.
The project identified a range of public domain and infrastructure improvements that help to improve the amenity, liveability, vibrancy, environmental sustainability, and viability of the core commercial precincts. The purpose of the plan was to assist the Council in prioritising renewal works to mitigate risk and improve the overall function of the Local Centres.
Focusing on the core precinct between Merewether and Windsor Streets the project also considered other opportunities in the surrounding streets, parks and open space connections. The Public Domain Plans provided Council with a framework to guide infrastructure and public domain improvements into the future.
