PORT STEPHENS KOALA SANCTUARY

Worimi, Port Stephens NSW

‘A story walk along a winding trail, with narratives expressed through interpretive signage’

Moir Studio was involved in the Koala Sanctuary Project, a facility of Port Stephens Council that allows tourists and families to experience koalas up close. Located in the vegetated bushland of Tomaree National Park, the facility features an information centre, accommodation, a koala hospital, sanctuary story walks, and a boardwalk through the koala enclosure tree canopies.

The project seeks to educate visitors about the hazards koalas face in the wild and provide suitable habitats for their future. The sanctuary story walk is a journey along a winding trail, with narratives expressed through interpretive signage and large playful koala sculptures.

A series of wayfinding elements help visitors navigate through the site and are designed to integrate seamlessly with the facility’s identity. Overall, the signage family utilises timber and perforated steel; a classic and contemporary look with a natural colour palette amongst the eucalyptus trees.
