RICHLEY RESERVE ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND

Awabakal, New Lambton NSW

'Iconic destination and green infrastructure thoughtfully integrate nature play for the community'

Blackbutt Reserve is an iconic destination within the Newcastle City Council area and an important piece of green infrastructure for the region's community. The play space and adjoining facilities positively contribute to the region's health, environmental, and social amenities. The design for Richley Reserve Adventure Playground reflects the unique character of Blackbutt Reserve and demonstrates Moir Studio’s commitment to implementing design best practices within the public domain.

The playground sensitively responds to the surrounding bushland setting by embracing the undulating topography and incorporating existing vegetation. The park is designed to minimise the disturbance to the surrounding bushland and encourages visitors to engage with nature. The range of play elements creates an inclusive play environment for various abilities and ages and a strong focus on nature play connects the children with the natural environment, encouraging exploration and imagination. The accommodating winding pathway minimises environmental impact and allows universal access to the play area and facilities.

Tactile elements such as timber, stone, sand, and water provide a safe but challenging environment for kids to build their confidence and resilience in nature. The upgrade included a new regional-scale playground, picnic facilities, accessibility improvements, and landscape embellishments, all in a bushland setting.

Moir Studio were lead consultants, providing full design services, managing sub-consultants, conducting design safety assessments, obtaining planning approvals, and administering the contract. The playground opened in September 2018 and has been very well received by the public.
