‘Collaborative approach to Enhance Brisbane Waters National Park, Integrating Cultural and Environmental Stewardship in Design Strategy’

Moir Studio understands the significant role of National Parks in providing the community with benefits across a broad spectrum of areas, including economic, social, cultural and environmental. Brisbane Waters National Park is a highly valuable asset in encouraging environmental stewardship and increasing cultural awareness by providing unique natural encounters that help to protect these important places for future generations.

As populations grow in our urban centres and the availability of quality recreation and open space becomes limited, the importance of access to natural moments for respite is becoming increasingly pertinent. The recent significant trend toward nature-based tourism has seen an increase in the pressure placed on existing National Park infrastructure, and as such, it is crucial that these assets are curated and designed in a way that meets the needs of the community and local environment now and into the future.

We worked with the Darkinjung Local Aboriginal Land Council to identify opportunities to integrate aboriginal culture and concepts of caring for country into the design of the precinct elements.

Our proposed design approach ensured that each design decision complements the existing landform, materiality, captures key vistas and respects the existing environment. During the course of this project our team developed an understanding of the key issues around construction methodology, access, cultural sensitivity, protection of sensitive vegetation and considerate materiality.
