‘Integrating Cultural History and Natural Play in Dubbo Botanic Gardens’
Wiradjuri Park was developed as part of the Dubbo Botanic Gardens and Adventure Play Area. The Park complements the gardens' existing function as an important civic and cultural hub, encouraging increased visitorship and expanding accessibility to social and cultural interaction.
A key driver for the overall design narrative was the concept of the three rivers that form the boundary of Wiradjuri country: the Wambool River, the Kalari River, and the Murrumbidjeri River. This provided an important educational tool and metaphorical link to the area's history.
The design abstracts the three rivers into three pathways, depicting the periods of pre-European settlement, early European settlement, the present and future.
Strategically placed gathering spaces, including passive rest areas, outdoor education areas, and more intimate spaces, provide opportunities for contemplation. The trails culminate at a large fire pit and performance area used for larger gatherings and ceremonial events. Wayfinding signage featuring Wiradjuri language complements the trails, providing educational information and orientation markers to guide and educate visitors through the park.
The serpent themed nature play area forms a soft boundary to the space, offering opportunities for discovery and adventure. The nature play elements connect the children with the serpent story and natural environment, encouraging exploration, imagination and education, providing a safe but challenging environment to build their confidence and resilience.
